Key Responsibilities:

• Assess and diagnose patients with mental health disorders and develop treatment plans based on their needs
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician or psychiatrist
• Monitor patients' mental health status and report changes in their condition to the supervising psychiatrist or physician
• Provide individual and group therapy to patients with mental health disorders
• Educate patients and their families about their mental health conditions and treatment options
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive mental health care
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records

Qualifications:

• Completion of an approved Registered Psychiatric Nurse program
• Active registration with the nursing college in the province/territory where you will be working
• Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in a mental health setting
• Vulnerable Persons Check and Adult and Child Abuse Registry Check
• Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
• Empathy and observational skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Specialty Skills:

• Acute Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in managing patients with acute mental health crises, knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
• Forensic Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in providing care to patients in a forensic setting, knowledge of the legal system and court procedures, and ability to manage patients with complex legal and mental health needs.
• Geriatric Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in providing care to elderly patients with mental health disorders, knowledge of geriatric care, and ability to manage patients with multiple chronic conditions.
• Pediatric Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in providing care to children with mental health disorders, knowledge of child development, and ability to communicate effectively with children and their families.
• Addiction Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in providing care to patients with substance abuse disorders, knowledge of addiction treatment, and ability to provide education and support to patients and their families.
• Eating Disorder Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in providing care to patients with eating disorders, knowledge of nutrition and behavioral therapy, and ability to manage patients with complex medical and mental health needs.
• Crisis Intervention Psychiatric Nurses: Must have experience in providing crisis intervention services, knowledge of crisis assessment and management, and ability to provide short-term counseling and support to patients and their families.
